How Much Weed Can You Legally Carry in Arizona? A 2026 Guide to Possession Limits

July 15, 2026

One of the most common questions we hear out at our farm in Dragoon is a simple one: how much cannabis can you actually carry in Arizona without running into trouble? Since Proposition 207 legalized adult use back in 2020, the rules have settled into something pretty easy to remember — but the details around concentrates, medical cards, driving, and home growing still trip people up. Here is a plain-spoken rundown for 2026.

The short answer: one ounce

If you are 21 or older, Arizona law lets you possess up to one ounce (about 28 grams) of cannabis flower at a time. That is the headline number, and for most people it is more than enough — an ounce is a lot of flower. You can buy it, carry it, and keep it at home without a medical card, as long as you picked it up from a licensed dispensary. If you are not sure where the nearest licensed shop is, our find a dispensary page is a good place to start.

Concentrates count differently

Here is the part that surprises people. Within that one-ounce allowance, no more than five grams can be in concentrate form — think live resin, rosin, hash, or the oil in a vape cartridge. Concentrates are far more potent by weight, so the law caps them separately. If you enjoy dabs or cartridges alongside your flower, it is worth keeping a rough tally in your head so the concentrate portion stays under five grams.

Medical cardholders get more room

Arizona still runs a medical program, and it comes with a higher ceiling. Qualified patients with a valid medical card can possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. If you regularly go through more than an ounce, or you simply like having a buffer, a card may still make sense — we broke down the trade-offs in our guide on whether a medical card is still worth it.

What happens if you go over

Going slightly over is not the felony situation many people imagine, but it is not nothing either. Possessing more than one ounce but less than 2.5 ounces is generally treated as a petty offense with a fine rather than jail time for a first situation. Larger amounts, or anything that looks like unlicensed sales, is where the penalties climb sharply. The takeaway is simple: staying at or under an ounce keeps everything easy.

Carrying it in your car

You can legally transport your ounce, but treat it a little like an open container of alcohol. Keep product sealed and ideally in the trunk or somewhere not within easy reach. Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal, full stop, and an open, half-used package in the cupholder is an easy way to invite questions. Buy it, take it home, and enjoy it there.

Where you can — and cannot — light up

Possession and consumption are two different things under Arizona law. You can carry your ounce almost anywhere, but you can only consume in a private residence or on private property where the owner allows it. Using cannabis in public places — parks, sidewalks, playgrounds, schools, and the like — is prohibited and can bring a fine. When in doubt, keep it private.

Growing your own at home

Adults 21 and older can also grow at home: up to six plants per adult, capped at 12 plants per household when two or more adults live there. The plants have to be in an enclosed, locked space that is not visible to the public. Flower you grow yourself does not count against your one-ounce carry limit while it stays at your residence, though it is meant for personal use, not sale.
