Walk up to the concentrate case at an Arizona dispensary and you’ll find a row of small jars with big vocabulary: live resin, cured resin, bubble hash, rosin, badder, diamonds. The prices swing just as widely as the names. As a family-run, sun-grown farm out in Dragoon, we get asked about this case constantly, so here’s the plain-spoken version of what each of these products actually is, what they typically cost in Arizona, and how to pick one you’ll be happy with.
What a concentrate actually is
Every concentrate starts the same way: separating the resin glands of the cannabis plant, called trichomes, from the plant material around them. Trichomes are where nearly all of the cannabinoids and terpenes live. What makes live resin different from hash, and hash different from rosin, comes down to two questions. Was the starting material fresh-frozen or dried and cured? And was the resin pulled out with a solvent, or with nothing but water, ice, heat, and pressure?
Live resin: flavor through freezing
Live resin is made from plants that are frozen immediately at harvest instead of being dried and cured. Freezing locks in the terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give a strain its character, before they can evaporate. The frozen material is then run through a hydrocarbon extraction and carefully purged, leaving a potent, terp-heavy concentrate that usually shows up as badder, sauce, or diamonds. If you want the closest thing to how a plant smelled the day it came down, live resin is the classic answer, and it tends to deliver the most flavor per dollar of anything in the case.
Hash: the original concentrate
Hash is the oldest concentrate there is, and the modern version, ice water hash or bubble hash, is refreshingly simple: the plant material is washed in ice-cold water, the trichome heads break off, and they’re collected through a series of fine mesh bags, then dried. No solvent ever touches it. Good hash is graded by how cleanly it melts when heated, which is why you’ll hear terms like “full melt.” Our BC Hash line is built on this approach, washed from flower we grew ourselves, so we know exactly what went into the wash because we grew every bit of it under Arizona sun.
Rosin: just heat and pressure
Rosin takes solventless one step further. Flower or bubble hash is pressed between heated plates, and the resin literally squeezes out. When the starting material is bubble hash made from fresh-frozen plants, the result is live rosin, generally considered the top shelf of the concentrate world. Nothing is added and nothing needs to be purged, which is why rosin commands the highest prices in the case. Whether that premium is worth it over a well-made live resin is a matter of taste, not a matter of one being “better.”
What concentrates cost in Arizona right now
Prices move with the market, but as of mid-2026 Arizona concentrates typically land in these ranges:
- Budget extracts (shatter, crumble): typically $15–$20 per gram
- Mid-tier (wax, badder, cured resin): typically $20–$38 per gram
- Premium (live resin, hash, rosin): typically $38–$60 per gram, with live rosin averaging around $50 a gram statewide
Arizona remains one of the more affordable concentrate markets in the country, and dispensary deal days can knock those numbers down further. If a price looks too good to be true for the category, check the label: batch date, testing info, and whether the terpene content is listed tell you a lot about what you’re really buying.
How to shop the case like a pro
A few habits will serve you better than chasing the highest THC number. Ask what the starting material was; concentrates made from whole flower rather than trim usually taste noticeably better. Look at color and texture in the jar, keeping in mind that color alone doesn’t equal quality. Check the batch date, since terpenes fade with time even in a sealed jar.
